French Editor Sacked in Muhammad Cartoon Row

Posted
By: Nekoro Gomes Jacques Lefranc, the managing editor of France Soir, was fired Wednesday after the Paris-based daily newspaper re-published a series of controversial cartoons seen as blasphemous to many Muslims.

The cartoons, originally published by Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten in September of last year, were re-published by France Soir and several European dailies as a show of support for the embattled Jyllands-Posten, according to press reports.

The Associated Press reports that Wednesday issues of France Soir, which is owned by Egyptian magnate Raymond Lakah, were barred from being released in Morocco and Tunisia.

According to a BBC.com story on the Lefranc firing, the decision to dismiss the managing editor the same day as the cartoon was published came from Lakah in response to criticism from several Muslim advocacy groups. The BBC.com also reported that employees at France Soir stood by their decision to re-print the cartoon on Thursday by running a front-page editorial defending their right to free speech.
