By: E&P Staff Friend of The Times-Picayune, the relief fund that so far has raised $300,000 to help employees of the New Orleans newspaper made homeless by Hurricane Katrina, is holding a fundraiser in New York City Wednesday night Oct. 10.
The event will run from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Time & Life Building, 1271 Avenue of the Americas. Attendees are being asked to make a minimum $50 donation. All proceeds will go to the 190 Times-Picayune employees who have requested aid from the fund.
Hosts will include John Huey of Time Inc.; Paul Steiger of The Wall Street Journal; Matthew Winkler and Amanda Bennett of Bloomberg News; Dean Baquet and Richard L. Berke of The New York Times; Nicholas Lemann of Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism; and, Walt Handelsman of Newsday.
Two New Orleans jazz pianists, Henry Butler and Davell Crawford, will perform at the fundraiser, sponsored by the Jazz Foundation of America.
Underwriting the event: Time Inc., Environmental Defense, the National Press Foundation, Citi and Goldman, Sachs & Co.
Friends of The Times-Picayune was established in September 2005 by four former Times-Picayune employees to help their colleagues. It has raised $300,000 to date through donations from hundreds of individual journalists, journalism organizations and foundations, and companies.
