Friends Remember Chauncey Bailey on Anniversary of Murder

By: Friends and family of an Oakland journalist gunned down in broad daylight last year gathered in his honor on the anniversary of his killing and called for further inquiry into his death.

A year ago Saturday 57-year-old Chauncey Bailey was killed by a masked gunman a few blocks from the Oakland Post, where he worked as an editor.

At the time Bailey was working on an investigative story about the inner workings of Oakland's Your Black Muslim Bakery, a troubled organization with a history of violence and power struggles.

Bakery handyman Devaughndre Broussard was charged for Bailey's murder after giving police a recorded confession, which he later recanted.

On Saturday former bakery members also gathered to criticize police handling of the case.

Saleem Bey, one of Bailey's sources for the story, says the killing has not been thoroughly investigated. Bey says the issue is if Broussard confessed because 22-year-old bakery leader Yusuf Bey IV told him to do so.

Bey IV, the son of bakery founder Yusuf Bey, is currently in jail on a separate kidnapping and torture case for which he faces the possibility of life in prison.

On Friday, Reporters Without Borders issued a statement criticizing the Oakland police department's handling of the case and called for the U.S. Justice Department to investigate Bailey's death. They also launched a petition drive.
