Ga. Coeds Who Plagiarized Won't Graduate

By: Daniel Yee, Associated Press Writer (AP) Two University of Georgia journalism students won't graduate next month because they plagiarized articles for a student newspaper, school officials said Thursday.

The seniors were found to have violated the Athens school's academic honesty policy and flunked the journalism course needed to graduate.

"The college and I have zero tolerance for this kind of activity," said John Soloski, dean of the Henry W. Grady School of Journalism and Mass Communication.

Soloski said the students may eventually graduate if they write a paper on journalism ethics and make up the course.

Both plagiarized articles written as part of a class assignment for The Red & Black newspaper, which is independent of the university.

One student wrote a story about a bicycle race that appeared in the paper's Monday edition. The story took information from a 2002 account of the race in The Athens Banner-Herald -- including the winners from 2002 rather than 2004.

The second student had an opinion column published in the paper Tuesday that was later determined to have borrowed phrasing from a 1994 column in the paper.
