Gallup: Americans and Their Gadgets

Posted
By: E&P Staff Many Americans asked for, and received, "gadgets" for Christmas. Do they really need them? A new Gallup survey finds that we are already pretty gadget-laden. For example, just a few short years after they came into wide use, nearly 8 in 10 (78%) of those over the age of 18 own cell phones.

Of perhaps even greater import: nearly half (48%) are now using high-speed internet. Roughly one-third have satellite TV and 12% get satellite radio even before Howard Stern starts. Just over 1 in 5 have HDTV.

Still leading the pack of gadgetry: the pervasiveness of VCRs (88%) and DVD players (83%).

More than 2 out of 3 (68%) are now tuned into cable TV, 65% have a desktop computer and exactly 50% have made the switch to digital cameras. Almost 20% have iPods or MP3 music players.

Wireless e-mail devices still lag, at 5%.
