Gallup: Americans Back Iraq Pullout, But Not "Immediately"

Posted
By: E&P Staff A new Gallup poll, completed earlier this week just before new attention created by Thursday's statements by Rep. John Murtha, reveals that only 19% of Americans back an "immediate" pullout from Iraq--but another 33% support a withdrawal within 12 months.

Some 38% say troops should stay "as long as needed" and only 7% advise, "send more."

Although Rep. Murtha (D-Pa.), a pro-military former Marine, referred to an "immediate" pullout he explained that he meant that he felt it could be carried out in about six months.

Other Gallup findings in the survey taken Nov. 11-13: 35% approved President Bush's handling of Iraq, 38% said it was "worth going to war" with 54% calaling it a "mistake."
