By: E&P Staff A new Gallup poll shows that the vast majority of Americans, despite voicing many worries about the direction of the country, still say they are "proud to be an American," most of them "extremely" so.
More than 9 in 10 said they were proud to be American, with 57% saying they felt "extremely" proud. Only 6% answered "only a little" or "not at all."
While the "proud" number has remained fairly stable for years, the "extremely" category has declined somewhat, from 70% three years ago.
In the "extremely" category there is no gender gap and, past the age of 30, no age differences. But there's quite a divergence based on political outlook--with 7 in 10 conservatives claiming extreme pride and only 4 in 10 liberals.
More Souterhners than other regional groups support this view.
