By: E&P Staff Despite no announcement on Monday, it's still expected that U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice William Rehnquist will retire soon, setting off a battle royale in Congress over choosing a successor. A new Gallup poll released Tuesday finds that most Americans want President Bush to be ready and willing to compromise with the Democrats.
According to the poll, 51% want the president to be ready with an alternate choice if Democrats object to the person he most favors, with 46% wanting him to stick to his guns.
It also found that 53% urge Democrats to ?work to defeat? a nominee who they find unacceptable, with 40% asking them to ?vote to confirm the president's nominee.?
Yet, asked about the general direction of the court, 41% says they would like the next nominee to make the court more conservative, with 30% seeking a more liberal direction and 24% wanting to keep the court as it is.
The poll was based on a phone survey of 1,003 adults on June 116-19 with a margin of error of plus or minus 3.
