GALLUP: Support for McCain Slides After Iraq Trip

Posted
By: E&P Staff A new Gallup Poll of Republicans' preferences for their party's 2008 presidential nomination shows Rudy Giuliani continuing to lead with Sen. John McCain in second -- and with his lowest level of support to date.

McCain's support stood at 28% in December and 21% in March and has now plunged to 16%. The latest poll was taken last week just after his now-famous trip to a Baghdad market.

"The April 2-5 Gallup Poll finds 38% of Republicans and Republican-leaning independents favoring Giuliani for the 2008 nomination, well ahead of his closest pursuer, McCain (16%)," Gallup reports. "Two unannounced but potential candidates -- Gingrich and Thompson -- tie for third at 10%. The remaining 10 candidates tested in the poll all score below 10%, led by Mitt Romney at 6%."

Giuliani also leads McCain easily in a one-on-one matchup.
