By: E&P Staff Gannett has signed on as the first client for a new media research lab recently created by Arizona State University's journalism school, the Arizona Republic reports.

The lab, consisting of 16 student researchers, will study the multimedia behavior of young people, and will help Gannett and other media companies keep up with the new ways that people are consuming news and entertainment.

"The news industry is at a crossroads," Christopher Callahan, dean of ASU's Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication is quoted as saying. "The changes in technology are coming so fast it's almost impossible for newspaper and television people to keep up.

Former Knight Ridder Digital president Tom Mohr, who is the director of the lab (and recently wrote an online "manifesto" for E&P) is quoted as saying that newspapers have to learn to make online delivery work.

"Online is where the action is," Mohr is quoted as saying. "More and more people will get their news there in the future and newspapers have to respond."
