Gannett Keeps Dividend Streak Alive With Mini-Payout

Posted
By: Mark Fitzgerald As it has now done for 164 consecutive quarters, Gannett Co. Inc. declared a dividend Tuesday -- but the payout will be substantially smaller than in past years.

In February, Gannett slashed its regular quarterly dividend by 90%, to 4 cents from 40 cents a share, to free up cash to pay down debt and strengthen its balance sheet.

Tuesday's payout will also be 4 cents a share, payable on Oct. 1 to shareholders of records on Sept. 11.

In the past year, many publicly traded newspaper publishers eliminated their dividend entirely, including The New York Times Co., The McClatchy Co., and Lee Enterprises Inc.
