By: E&P Staff The three newspaper companies that own CareerBuilder.com -- Gannett Co. Inc., Knight Ridder and Tribune Co. -- are stretching out into other online territories. The companies announced today that they have jointly acquired CrossMedia Services Inc., a provider of Web-based marketing solutions for national and local retailers.

CrossMedia's services can turn print-based retail promotions like circulars, direct mail and ROP ads into search-based interactive formats. "Our online solutions complement the way consumers use the daily and Sunday newspapers to find what's on sale and other great values in their local markets," said Brian Hand, chairman and CEO of CrossMedia Services in a press release. "We are excited to be part of a new venture that will bring retailers innovative Web-based marketing solutions to extend the reach and life of their print promotions."

Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
