By: E&P Staff Gannett Co. Inc. and Morris Multimedia have finalized an exchange of newspapers that will allow Gannett to bolster its position in Tennessee and Morris to strengthen its hold in Georgia.
Gannett got The Review Appeal in Franklin, Tenn., and the Daily News Journal in Murfreesboro, Tenn. The Appeal has a circulation of 6,800; the News Journal has a circ of 15,000, the company announced Monday. Gannett also acquired two weekly newspapers and a monthly publication from Morris.
Savannah, Ga.-based Morris picked up The Times of Gainesville, Ga., with a circulation of 20,100, and several non-daily publications in the Gainesville area.
"This is a strategic transaction for both Gannett and Morris Multimedia," Gary Watson, president of Gannett's newspaper division, said in a statement. "These publications complement our existing titles in the middle Tennessee region and will allow Gannett to increase its profile in this dynamic region." Gannett also owns The Tennessean in Nashville and numerous non-daily publications in the area.
"This [allows] Morris Multimedia to strengthen further its cluster of Georgia properties," said Charles Morris, president and CEO of the company. Morris will continue to operate its newspapers and shopper in McMinnville and Smithville, Tenn.
Gannett publishes 101 daily newspapers, including USA Today. Morris operates 35 daily and weekly newspapers and 49 specialty publications, as well as four network-affiliated television stations in eight states and the Caribbean.
