Gannett Working 24/7 to Fix 'Severe Problem' on Web Sites

By: E&P Staff Newspaper company Gannett has been having "severe" problems since Monday with its Web sites, and is still unable to find the root cause of the problems, according to a memo sent to staff by the company's vice president of online content and operations.

Peter Lundquist said in the memo that the sites' problems center around the Publicus content managment system, called SAXOTECH Online, which interfaces with (among other things) operations related to weather content, prep sports, story chat, and user registration. The Web site of the company's major national newspaper, USA Today, does not use the SAXOTECH tool, but the system is used by all of the company's other newspapers to send content to their Web sites.

Tara Connell, Gannett's Vice President of Corporate Communications, said that the news and other content on the sites was not being corrupted, but that occassionally stories and links were being lost.

The company has already started to notice traffic levels dropping at the sites, according to Lundquist, and Gannett has both staffers and external consultants working 24/7 to fix the problem. The problem has limited or cut off many online Gannett staffers' access to the to the software.

Citing "growing anger and frustration," the memo asked staffers to report any changes to templates and design they made recently, or any changes they might have made to the automated processes in their system.

Lunquist said that the company is brainstorming ideas for ways to provide temporary relief while the company's tech experts work on finding the core issue.
