By: Twentieth Century Fox has acquired the exclusive rights to develop and distribute a movie based on the "Garfield" comic by Jim Davis of Universal Press Syndicate. The film is being developed as a live-action production, with a computer-generated "Garfield."
Davis Entertainment, headed by John Davis (no relation to Jim Davis), plans to produce the film. The company has produced nearly 50 movies, including
Dr. Doolittle starring Eddie Murphy,
Grumpy Old Men and
Grumpier Old Men starring Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau,
The Firm starring Tom Cruise,
The Chamber starring Gene Hackman, and
Courage Under Fire starring Denzel Washington and Meg Ryan.
Alec Sokolow and Joel Cohen, co-writers for
Toy Story, are writing the screenplay. They have developed a treatment and met with Jim Davis recently to further develop the storyline and script.
A timetable for the production and release of the film won't be known until Fox decides whether or not to greenlight the project. The decision could be made later this year.
