By: E&P Staff It will be an event-filled "year of the cat" for the "Garfield" property as Jim Davis' comic approaches its 30th anniversary on June 19.
As E&P reported in February 2007, 26 episodes of a new animated "Garfield" TV show are in the works. The series -- from an international team led by Ellipsanime, a division of Dargaud Marina in Paris -- will debut on France 3 this fall during prime time before joining the afterschool lineup for the 2009 season. "The Garfield Show" is also being marketed worldwide.
Previously, the "Garfield & Friends" series aired on CBS starting in 1988. A DVD collection of some of the shows focusing on Jon Arbuckle, Garfield's "owner," is due out in May from Fox Home Entertainment. The title: "A Cat and His Nerd."
Then, in August, there'll be another DVD -- called "Garfield at (Burp) 30" -- containing some of the best "Garfield" TV shows.
Also that month, a new CGI movie called "Garfield's Fun Fest" is scheduled for release. The film is written by Davis.
And in October, Ballantine plans to publish a 30th-anniversary "Garfield" book.
The "Garfield" strip runs in about 2,600 newspapers via Universal Press Syndicate.
