Garry Trudeau Discusses His 'Doonesbury' Comic About Blogging

Posted
By: Dave Astor What were Garry Trudeau's thoughts when he created a "Doonesbury" comic that took a humorous look at newspaper political blogging?

"I wasn't picking on anyone or any blog in particular," replied Trudeau, when contacted by E&P. "I was just commenting on how many journalists seem to be pulling double-duty now -- and wondering what the impact is on quality."

The Sunday strip shows the Rick Redfern journalist character working on his campaign blog. Rick is so busy with other Washington Post work that all he can come up with for his blog is "Has Clinton peaked? Only time will tell." But Rick says this comment is only "a rough draft." The strip can be seen here.

Trudeau -- whose comic runs in about 1,400 newspapers via Universal Press Syndicate -- said he "didn't get much reaction" to the blogging-related strip.

E&P's just-published December magazine includes an article about newspaper political blogging by Joe Strupp.
