By: E&P Staff GateHouse Media has agreed to purchase the Daily Messenger of Canandaigua and 10 suburban weeklies around Rochester, N.Y., from the family of George Ewing Jr.

Terms of the transaction brokered by Cribb, Greene & Associates, were not disclosed.

Messenger Post Newspapers, which employs 176 people, has been on the block since August. The Daily Messenger has a circulation of 13,000. The combined distribution of the weeklies is around 100,000.

"The decision to sell our newspapers after 47 years of Ewing ownership was not taken lightly," said Ewing, who is publisher of the Daily Messenger, in a statement. "I am confident GateHouse has the desire and resources to continue what we have established and expand Messenger Post Newspapers to even better serve Rochester and our region."

GateHouse is based in Fairport, N.Y., a suburb of Rochester. It became a publicly traded company last month. It owns 423 community publications in 18 states.

"This acquisition fits extremely well with our strategy of acquiring dominant local media franchises that are accretive to free cash flow per share," said Michael Reed, CEO of GateHouse, in a statement.
