GateHouse Buys Again: Fills In Peoria Cluster With Weeklies

By: E&P Staff On the same day it announced a rare sell-off of a newspaper, community paper publisher GateHouse Media Inc. agreed to acquire TimesNewspaper, a chain of five weeklies and four shoppers in the Peoria, Ill., area.

Terms of the deal, which is expected to close Monday, were not disclosed.

Fairport, N.Y.-based GateHouse is buying TimesNewspaper from principal owner Jim Glassman.

Included in the deal are five weeklies: the Peoria Times-Observer; the Chillicothe Times-Bulletin; the Morton Times-News; The East Peoria Times-Courier; and the Washington Times-Reporter.

In April, GateHouse acquired from The Copley Press three Ohio papers, and four dailies in central Illinois, including the Peoria Journal Star.

The chain owns 21 dailies in Illinois, and 87 nationwide.

Thursday, GateHouse also announced it had agreed to sell The Herald-Dispatch and related publications in Huntington, W.Va., to Champion Industries Inc. for $77 million.
