Posted
By: E&P Staff Just a day after completing the $380 million acquisition of nine Copley papers, GateHouse Media Inc. on Thursday agreed to buy four dailies from Gannett Co. for $410 million.

The four papers are the Norwich (Conn.) Bulletin; the Rockford (Ill.) Register Star; the Observer-Dispatch in Utica, N.Y.; and The Herald-Dispatch in Huntington, WV.

Gannett presently publishes 90 daily papers.

"This sale makes perfect sense for Gannett as we move forward under our strategic plan," Sue Clark-Johnson, president of Gannett's Newspaper Division, said in a statement. "It's very difficult to say good-bye. We deeply appreciate all the hard work by the employees of these terrific newspapers over the many years they have been part of the Gannett family."

The sale is expected to close at the end of this month.

Dirks, Van Essen & Murray, the Santa Fe, N.M.-based newspaper merger-and-acquisition firm, represented Gannett in the transaction.
