General Mills Signs On to Online Newspaper-Insert Coupon Service

By: E&P Staff Consumer packaged-goods giant General Mills renewed its contract last week with Consumer Networks' Boodle, an online coupons service available on 250 newspaper Web sites nationwide, after a successful trial run.

Boodle is an online version of the coupon inserts found in Sunday newspapers. The service features the nation's largest offering of online coupons from major consumer packaged-goods companies, and it is offered in papers published by Gannett, Tribune, Knight Ridder, Copley, and Freedom Communications.

"The Boodle program offered through newspaper Web sites provides a way for us to reach a new group of consumers we may not otherwise reach through traditional promotional vehicles," Karl Schmidt, General Mills' direction of consumer price promotion, corporate coupon planning, and development, said in a statement. "Consumers benefit by being able to access coupons whenever they want when it is most convenient to them."

Major brands from General Electric, SC Johnson, Kimberly-Clark, and Kimberly-Clark are also offer coupons on Boodle.

"Until now, consumer brands have been struggling with the best way to offer coupons over the Internet and, in particular, how to allow customers to find coupons online," Les Howe, CEO of consumer networks, said in a statement. "Boodle is an online coupon solution that gives [consumer packaged-goods companies] a secure way to deliver coupons to millions of online consumers via newspaper Web sites...."

Consumer Networks has been working since 1998 to develop an online coupon solution to meet the needs of consumer packaged-goods companies, retailers, and consumers.
