Geopolitics With a Detroit Angle

Posted
By: Dave Astor The Detroit News has two good local reasons for sending two staffers to cover the war in faraway Iraq.

The auto industry, which has a history of producing military vehicles, is of course in the paper's circulation area. "And we have a very, very large Arab-American population -- a number of whom fled from Iraq during the last 25 years," said News Publisher and Editor Mark Silverman.

He said embedded News photographer Max Ortiz, based on an aircraft carrier, recently filed a piece about how some U.S. soldiers of Muslim faith are conflicted about the war. "It's a great story for anybody, but it's particularly good for our market," Silverman told E&P Online.

Ortiz is sending back two to three sets of photos a day as well as text material. The News also has embedded reporter John Bebow in southern Iraq, from where he is transmitting about a story a day along with notes.
