By: E&P Staff The publisher of the Neue Westf?lische, a daily with 16 regional editions published in Bielefeld, Germany, commissioned manroland subsidiary ppi Media to install a new prepress workflow after it bought a new press with integrated ABB control system, MPS Production.
The aim is to plan production more flexibly, making it less dependent on the publisher for business. In the future, the printnet OM computer-to-plate management system and PlanPag planning system will connect to Neue Westf?lische's press controls, with PlanPag data imported to the control system. This summer, however, the data will be refined in the ABB system and exported to the CTP output management system. using printnet OM, the workflow will enable exact labeling of plates, even if pages are later replanned.
The workflow changeover and new press are the first of extensive modernizations in Bielefeld. "Bit by bit we plan to replace the old systems and machinery, using innovative solutions to position ourselves optimally for the future," Publishing Director Axel Walker said in a statement.
With a circulation of just under 150,000, Neue Westf?lische employs about 500 people, almost 140 of them editors. Another 1,000 work as freelancers and correspondents in D?sseldorf, Berlin, Brussels and Washington.
