Gerritt Wins Eugene C. Pulliam Fellowship for Editorial Writing

By: E&P Staff Jeff Gerritt, an editorial writer for the Detroit Free Press, has been awarded with the 2007 recipient of the Eugene C. Pulliam Fellowship for Editorial Writing.

The award, which is presented annually by the Sigma Delta Chi Foundation of the Society of Professional Journalists, grants the recipient a $75,000 to research and prepare his work on the problems facing urban America and ways for its leaders to confront these issues.

The Detroit Free Press will publish these series of articles by Gerritt over the first nine months of 2008.

Gerritt has worked at the Free Press since 2000 as an editorial writer. Prior to that, he worked as an urban affairs reproter and editor for the paper, as well as a heatlh and education reporter for USA Today, and a special projects reporter for the Green Bay (Wis.) Press-Gazette.

Gerritt's work has won dozens of awards, including The Batten Medal and Unity Award, and has been honored by The Associated Press, Detroit Press Foundation, and the Society of Professional Journalists. His reporting on the death of a mentally ill inmate was aired on '60 Minutes.'

The Eugene C. Pulliam for Editorial Writing was first offered in 1977. Mr. Pulliam was one of the original members of the Society of Professional Journalists, and a former publisher of The Indianapolis Star, The Indianapolis News, The Arizona Republic, and The Phoenix Gazette.
