'Getting to Purple' Cartoon Contest for Wisconsin Residents

Posted
By: E&P Staff A political cartoon contest is being held for Wisconsin residents, according to the Green Bay Press-Gazette.

It's being sponsored by the Wisconsin Academy of Sciences, Arts and Letters, in cooperation with the Wisconsin Newspaper Association and WisPolitics.com.

The contest is part of the academy's September 2008 "Evenings Miniseries" topic -- "Getting to Purple: Beyond the Red and Blue of Partisan Politics." Cartoons must relate to that topic and be received by Aug. 18.

Four professional Wisconsin cartoonists will judge the contest: Joe Heller of the Press-Gazette and Heller Syndication, Stuart Carlson of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel and Universal Press Syndicate, Phil Hands of the Wisconsin State Journal in Madison, and Brian Strassburg of the Isthmus newspaper in Madison.

Carlson is leaving the Journal Sentinel Aug. 15 after being forced to take a buyout.

Finalists' cartoons will be displayed at all "Evenings Miniseries" events. The Wisconsin State Journal will publish the winning cartoon, and the top three cartoons will be printed in the winter 2008 issue of the academy magazine "Wisconsin People & Ideas."
