Getty's 'Olympics Photo of the Day' -- And the Story Behind It

Posted
By: E&P Staff Last week we introduced a new feature to run for the next couple of weeks: Getty Images picks its 'Photo of the Day' from the Olympic Games in Beijing, and the photographer describes how he or she got it.

The contests have now shifted from a focus on swimming and gymnastics to track and field. Of course, dozens of other events, including softball, table tennis and basketball, continue, if a bit behind the scenes for now. There was even a beanwall war in baseball yesterday between the U.S. and China.

Here is today's Getty selection -- see below.

The caption -- and "How I Got That Picture" narrative -- follows. Watch for the next pick, coming on Wednesday.

I was positioned in-field for the women?s uneven bar final and was photographing Beth Tweddle of Great Britain.

In gymnastics you look for a good action shot, preferably with a clean, black background and without the spotlights in the image.

This photograph captured these elements, but what made it more unusual is that the gymnast came from under the lower bar, which is very rare.
