Gillmor to leave 'San Jose Mercury News'

By: E&P Staff Influential tech columnist Dan Gillmor is leaving the San Jose (Calif.) Mercury News to peruse other projects, according to the paper.

Since 1994, Gillmor has covered technology in Silicon Valley for the Mercury News and was one of the first pioneers to use a blog on his beat, starting in 1999. He has written extensively on public policy and the people who make the Valley tick.

In a note posted on his blog yesterday, Gillmor said he'll be working on a citizen-journalism project. "I hope to pull together something useful that helps enable -- and demonstrates -- the emerging grassroots journalism that I wrote about in my recent book. Something powerful is happening, it's in the early stages and I have a chance to help figure this out," he wrote.

"Of course, I am leaving one of the best gigs in journalism. The Merc has been incredibly good to me. There are so many talented and good-hearted folks here.

"I hate the idea of leaving. But I'd hate not trying this even more."
