By: A young girl died and a teenaged boy remained in critical condition Thursday after an early morning fire engulfed their home, city fire officials said. The children's father was in stable condition. Their mother escaped without serious injuries.

The (Baltimore) Sun identified the father as Stephen A. Young, deputy copy desk chief at the paper since 1998. He was being treated at the University of Maryland's R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center. The paper said Young's 16-year-old son, Matthew, a student at the Park School, is at Sinai Hospital. His 11-year-old daughter, Abigail, a sixth-grader at the Calvert School, died shortly after arrival at Sinai. Young's wife, Nancy, was not injured.

Fire broke out at the home in the Roland Park neighborhood around 4:15 a.m., Capt. Roman Clark, a fire department spokesman.

Firefighters arrived to find the three-story red brick house engulfed in heavy flames and smoke.

The cause of the fire was under investigation.

"The whole Baltimore Sun family is shocked and saddened by this tragedy that has struck our friend and colleague," Sun publisher Timothy E. Ryan said in a statement. "Steve's loss is a painful reminder that the heartbreaking stories we cover each day happen to people just like us - that something like this can happen at any time to any of us, or the person we sit next to every day at the office."

Battalion Chief Gary Metzbower told The Sun that the home had smoke detectors, but they did not alert the occupants. Metzbower said a barking dog woke the family up.
