By: Lucia Moses Elizabeth Neuffer, a longtime reporter for The Boston Globe was killed Thursday in a car crash in Iraq while covering the war's aftermath, the Globe announced Friday.

Neuffer, 46, was a passenger in a car that apparently hit a guardrail near Samarra. Her translator also died in the accident while the driver survived, according to a Globe press release.

The reporter was working on a story about Iraq's recovery that was set to be published Sunday, the release stated.

The Committee to Protect Journalists' Web site reports 13 journalists have died in Iraq, besides Neuffer. Of the 13, nine were killed in action. An additional two are missing, according to the site.

Globe Editor Martin Baron praised Neuffer for her courage, energy, and eloquent writing.

"We have lost an exceptional journalist, a treasured colleague, and a wonderful friend," he said in a statement.

Neuffer made a specialty of covering the world's hot spots. Since joining the Globe in 1988, her assignments ran from the fall of the Soviet Union to the 1991 Persian Gulf War to Afghanistan. In 1997, she won the SAIS-Novartis Prize for Excellence in International Journalism for her coverage of war crimes in Bosnia and Rwanda.
