'Goat' Producers Mad Over 'NY Times' Ad Mixup

Producers of the 2002 Tony-winning best play were upset by a color ad mistakenly running in the paper's June 9 "Arts and Leisure" section proclaiming that "Metamorphoses" had won the top drama prize last Sunday.

"Two shows have been hurt by this, and someone must be held accountable," an irate Elizabeth McCann, a producer of "The Goat," said Thursday in a statement. "If someone runs a red light and someone gets hurt, a simple apology doesn't fix that."

It wasn't clear how the mix-up occurred. The section's entire run is printed Wednesday for distribution on Saturday and Sunday.

"We are still looking into the matter," said Times spokesman Toby Usnik, while producers for "Metamorphoses" declined comment until they got a fuller explanation from the Times.

Meanwhile, "The Goat" will have a large ad in Friday's paper.

"There will be a full-page ad in The New York Times tomorrow but I don't know what the financial terms of it are," said Sam Rudy, a spokesman for "The Goat." Rudy did say the ad will run on Page 3 of the Times' "Weekend" section, a desirable position, Broadway producers believe, because it is across from the paper's widely read theater column.

"The Goat," Edward Albee's play about the limits of love, and "Metamorphoses," a water-drenched reinterpretation of the myths of Ovid, were in hot contention for the best-play Tony, which inevitably boosts a show's box-office receipts.

"The Goat" will also have an ad, trumpeting its win, in this Sunday's "Arts and Leisure."
