For newspapers now at a critical crossroads in their digital strategy -- deciding whether and how to charge for their content, or how to monetize their traffic with the industry’s default free model -- one question looms above all others: What can Google News do for me or what is Google News trying to do to me?
At Editor & Publisher’s Interactive Media Conference, newspapers will hear directly how they can benefit from Google News heads up the news aggregator, Josh Cohen, senior business product manager for Google.
Mr. Cohen will be the keynote speaker on the second day of the Interactive Media Conference, which will be held June 16-17 at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas.
Despite the harsh assessments of such very high-profile publishers as News Corp. Chairman Rupert Murdoch, who accuses Google of essentially stealing newspaper content, Mr. Cohen has been a relentless proselytizer for developing a mutually beneficial partnership between news content producers and his incredibly popular site. But more than just preaching about Google News, Mr. Cohen lays out the specifics newspapers need to know to profit from the enormous traffic Google News generates for them.
As Mr. Cohen told E&P in an exclusive interview in its May print edition, “In a given month, we send about a billion clicks to all the different publishers in Google News.”
The stakes, it’s clear, are high. The chance to hear from the top executive at Google News could hardly be more timely.
John Paton, whose bold steps to revive Journal Register Co. are making news literally around the world, will be the keynote speaker on Wednesday, June 16.
Some 40 top media figures from inside and outside the newspaper industry will talk on these and more urgent topics:
* Can Digital Tablets Save Media?
* Vendor Roulette: Choosing the Right One
* It's All About the App
* Lessons From the Local Startups
* Advertising Focus: Reaching Jaded Consumers
* Editorial Focus: Will Twitter Peter Out?
The Interactive Media Conference also includes the 15th-annual EPpy Awards, showcasing the best media company Web sites. Over both days, the annual Tradeshow will feature leading technology vendors and service providers to help newsrooms, operations, sales and circulation succeed in these challenging times.
On Tuesday, June 15th, Suburban Newspapers of America will sponsor the pre-conference BLINDER/SNA REVENUE BOOT CAMP - ONLINE, PRINT, MOBILE & MORE.
