By: E&P Staff Google's head of media and publishing partnerships for Europe, Rob Jonas, said that since opening up its site to Google News and making content partially free last October, The Financial Times's Web site, FT.com, saw a 75 per cent increase in traffic and gained an extra 230,000 registered users.
The remarks were made at the MediaGuardian Changing Media Summit in London and reported by the Press Gazette.
Jonas was said to be cautious when asked about Google's position on Automated Content Access Protocol (ACAP), a tool to give news publishers more control over how search engines access their online content.
Google is in talks with the media industry and its search competitors about ACAP. Jonas said that the view within Google was that the existing model was best for "what publishers need to do."
