By: E&P Staff Declaring its "Living Stories" experiment with The New York Times and The Washington Post a success, Google Thursday made the technology available to any news organization.
In the Living Stories project at the Times and Post, which began last December, a particular page would follow a topic such as the war in Afghanistan. Instead of simply aggregating entire new stories each time they appeared, the new information would become part of a single story. Readers could also follow the topic through graphics, a timeline and other approaches. A registered user sees new articles highlighted when returning to the page.
On the company's Google News Blog, software engineer Neha Singh and Senior Business Product Manager Josh Cohen wrote that "75% of people who sent us feedback said they preferred the Living Stories format to the traditional online news article."
They said that readers of Living Stories spent "a significant amount of time exploring stories."
Google has been pitching Living Stories as a way to increase reader engagement.
Living Stories was made available as open source code, which can be accessed
here.
