Google Warns News Media Over Using Its Name as a Verb

By: E&P Staff Online search giant Google has sent letters to media companies, warning them against using its name as a verb, a British newspaper reports.

The article in The Independent says that Google has increasingly become concerned about trademark violations and quoted a company spokesman as saying "We think it's important to make the distinction between using the word Google to describe using Google to search the internet, and using the word Google to describe searching the internet. It has some serious trademark issues."

The name Google is in the newest edition of the Oxford English Dictionary, while the verb "to google" was included in Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary.
