Google Working On Payment System for Content

Posted
By: E&P Staff Google is in the early stages of developing a payment system available for use by media companies for news content, reports Nieman Journalism Lab's Zachary Seward.

The news about the Internet giant working on an extension of its "checkout" platform was in response to a request made by the Newspaper Association of America. The organization has been reaching out to technology companies for paid content strategies.

Google's platform will apparently allow media companies to charge in a variety of ways including subscriptions, syndication and micropayments.

In the memo, Google said that content can thrive on the Internet under a variety of models including subscription-only content. However, the company said it does not think micropayments will "be the norm for accessing content."
