By: E&P Staff Film director Michael Moore is still slated to write a guest column for USA Today next Tuesday through Friday from the Republican National Convention in New York.
Yesterday, on his Web site, www.michaelmoore.com, the director of "Fahrenheit 9/11" made this offer to President Bush: "George, I know you said you don't read the newspaper, but USA Today has given me credentials to the Republican convention to write a guest column each day next week. If you don't want to read it, you and I will be in the same building so maybe I could come by and read it to you? Lemme know. ..."
In a similar bit of counter-programming, USA Today had hired Ann Coulter to cover the Democratic convention in Boston last month, but killed her column due to problems in "tone" and after she balked at heavy editing. She was replaced by conservative writer Jonah Goldberg.
In a column published today in the New York Daily News, columnist Lloyd Grove wrote, "Word is that party officials aren't happy that the pugnacious Moore -- wearing the credentials of a legitimate journalist -- will be the skunk at their garden party next week, traipsing around Madison Square Garden and maybe even causing trouble."
Grove quoted a Republican delegate from Mississippi commenting on Moore: "I was a deputy sheriff for five years, and I've dealt with a lot of people who have that mindset. But if he listens with his heart and his mind, he'll come out of there a changed man. Lord knows he needs some redemption."
