'Gordo' Cartoonist Gus Arriola Memorialized in 'Baldo' Comic

By: E&P Staff Today's "Baldo" comic pays tribute to "Gordo" cartoonist Gus Arriola, who died Feb. 2 at the age of 90.

"Baldo" co-creator Hector Cantu, who does the Universal Press Syndicate comic with Carlos Castellanos, told E&P earlier this month that "Gus broke ground for Latino strips. He was a tremendous inspiration to me and Carlos."

Today's "Baldo" strip -- which can be seen here -- ends with: "In memory of our amigo, Gus Arriola, 1917-2008."

E&P's obituary of Arriola -- who created "Gordo" from 1941 to 1985 -- can be seen here.
