Goss Looks to Scale Back its Preston Operations

Posted
By: E&P Staff Goss International, Bolingbrook, Ill., is proposing to restructure its Preston, England, operations, retaining the site as a "key facility for research and development, project management, sales and support services" but relocating some activities to other sites.

Announcing the proposal, Goss CEO Bob Brown said the change would "improve our cost model and continue the positive momentum and growth we have generated over the past three years." Citing its "global capacity," he said the company has a chance to streamline its U.K. resources and align them with market demand while enhancing quality, product range and support.

Goss is talking with the Amicus trade union to work out a restructuring that it says may include eliminating an as-yet unspecified number of jobs in Preston, which employs 350 people.

The Goss Flexible Printing System's engineering will remain in Preston, where design enhancements, tower additions, and support for other products manufactured there (including Colorliner and HT70 presses) also will be managed.

Goss International has 4,000 employees at nine manufacturing facilities in six countries. The company reported 2005 sales of more than $1.1 billion.
