By: E&P Staff Kobe Shimbun Co. Ltd. ordered from Goss International a Goss Newsliner 90 doublewide press to expand its business and increase color capacity. The press will be installed at its facility in Kobe city, west of Osaka, and is expected to be on edition by the middle of October.
Kobe Shimbun has operated six other Goss presses -- a Goss Metroliner press and Goss Newsliner towers -- at its Seishin Production Center facility since 1989 and 2000, respectively. Executive Director Sachiya Ishii cited ease of operation and maintenance and the Newsliner's 90,000-copy-per-hour speed while preserving quality as "main considerations" in selecting the press.
The Newsliner will consist of two four-high towers, two two-high towers, one folder and four reelstands. It will be capable of printing 32 pages with 16 pages in full color. Goss DigiRail digital inking will enable full use of preset data to minimize waste.
Besides 820,000 copies of morning and evening editions of the Kobe Shimbun, the plant prints approximately 150,000 copies of a subsidiary sports daily and other titles.
