Goss Rebuilds, Upgrades Virginian-Pilot Equipment

By: E&P Staff Norfolk's Virginian-Pilot has chosen Goss International to rebuild its five Goss Metroliner presses and convert 30 pasters to Goss Digital Paster Systems. The units and folder rebuild will be completed in early 2009; the RTP upgrade will be finished in 2008.

The project follows a decision to rebuild rather than replace the 30-year-old "worn out" press, according to Virginian-Pilot Press Operations Manager Al Byrd. A comprehensive press audit by Goss International, he said in a statement, helped to determine the precise scope of the project.

After soliciting bids, the units and folder project was awarded to Goss "because of their price, overall strategy, and because they knew the press the best," Byrd said, adding that the press rebuild is under way and on schedule.

The 183,024-circulation (214,995 Sundays) Landmark Communications daily took a different approach for its RTP upgrade, asking Goss and another vendor to each rebuild one RTP unit. Goss was chosen after three months of performance testing, according to Byrd.
