Goss Uniliner Doublewide Installed in Italy

Posted
By: E&P Staff Italian printer LitoSud srl recently installed a shaftless Goss Uniliner doublewide press line in Milan, where it went into production seven months after the order.

Goss' Nantes, France, design team not only had to prepare site plans but also had to modify folders and printing units based on LitoSud format and production requirements. During planning, LitoSud decided to put both press lines in the plant, requiring an in-line installation to direct all four webs to one folder.

The Uniliner consists of four four-high towers with 500mm cut-off and 1400mm web width, four reelstands and two Goss 2:5:5 jaw folders. Two mono units and two reelstands were added later.

According to LitoSud Chairman Mario Farina, Italian dailies are increasing page counts while shrinking page size, moving to full color and, especially for free papers, increasing print runs.

Litosud also will add capacity in Rome and Milan with two identical Uniliner presses -- two towers, one mono unit and three reelstands -- at the beginning of next year. It also plans similar investments in the near future.

The company's Rome, Milan, and Bergamo plants annually produce a half-billion copies of titles that include La Stampa, Il Tempo, Il Giornale D'Italia, L'Unita, Milano Finanza, Italia Oggi, L'Indipendente, Sportsman, and Bloomberg, as well as the free dailies Leggo (Il Messaggero) and City (Corriere della Sera).
