Goss Upgrades Altoona Mirror Press Controls

Posted Monday, December 1, 2008 12:00 am

By: E&P Staff The Altoona (Pa.) Mirror recently upgraded consoles on its Goss Headliner Offset press to take full advantage of a computer-to-plate system that will be installed soon.

The new Goss press consoles provide centralized job control, press setup and quality-control functions. Simple operator screen functionality minimizes training, according to Pressroom Manager Dave Mentzler.

"Everything was on time or early," Mentzler said in a statement, confidence in the crew, some of whom had installed the press years before.

"While the new system will enable us to take full advantage of its presetting system and give us better color and lower waste, what I like best is that now I can get parts for it," Mentzler said.

The Mirror circulates 30,343 copies weekdays, 37,065 on Sunday.

How Dublin Inquirer uses legal risk assessments to keep accountability journalism moving

When Dublin Inquirer publishes a sensitive accountability story, the challenge isn’t just reporting the facts. It’s deciding whether a small, seven-person newsroom can afford the legal risks that sometimes come with telling the public what it needs to know. For editor and co-founder Sam Tranum and deputy editor Lois Kapila, those decisions once came down to late-night conversations and educated guesswork. Today, the independent Dublin newsroom relies on Reporters Shield’s Legal Risk Assessment service to help identify potential legal vulnerabilities before publication—allowing journalists to move forward with greater confidence while keeping important stories alive.
