By: E&P Staff Evening Post Publishing Co., Charleston, S.C., has invested in Goss Digital Inking enhancements for 54 printing couples and press console upgrades for two of its Goss Metroliner presses, which print The Post and Courier. The equipment will be installed in October to reduce waste and improve print quality and start-up efficiency.
The digital inking system facilitates fast start-ups and improves ink setting consistency during the run, with the positive-displacement ink pump always ready to provide the correct volume of ink through synchronization with the speed of the press.
Post and Courier Production Director Mickey Bella said in a statement that an interface to Agfa computer-to-plate units is planned in order to take advantage of digital presetting. "We aim to reduce waste by more than 1,000 copies per press." He added that the total control upgrade allows us to keep ink consumption to a minimum by delivering only the ink that is needed."
The inking system can be installed during scheduled downtime on a unit-by-unit basis, without disrupting production schedules and requires little or no maintenance, according to Bella.
The Evening Post Publishing Company also prints three other dailies, 12 weeklies, and semi-commercial work. Its interests in other media include television stations.
