By: E&P Staff Young adults delivered another sucker punch to the industry as many college grads plan to eschew newspaper help-wanted ads in favor of other avenues to find work. Up to 60% of those graduating in 2004 will turn first to Monster.com and Hotjobs.com in their job searches. Only 36% of those say they will look in their local newspapers, according to poll conducted by Harris Interactive and reported in the May 25 edition of Classified Intelligence Report.
Many young grads will also go directly to the source, searching on company-specific Web sites. "Company Web sties were listed ahead of, or even with help from friends and family," said Harlan Wahram, director of The Millennium Generation Studies, in the report.
Meanwhile, this summer The Boston Globe plans to deliver a freestanding branded apartment guide in conjunction with listings and advertising on Boston.com. The company will distribute 60,000 of the free monthly publication, according to Classified Intelligence Report. The guide will coincide with Boston.com's relaunch of its real estate section. Peter Newton, vice president of advertising for the Boston Globe, told Classified Intelligence: "The guide will help leverage the brand and also build on the strength of the apartment base in the Globe." He also noted that the site sees more traffic for apartments than for homes for sale.
