By: E&P Staff The Grand Forks (N.D.) Herald is offering buyouts to about 60 employees whose age and years of employment at the paper total 65 or more.
Publisher and Editor Mike Jacobs said the goal of the buyout program, announced late last week, is to reduce the paper's overall workforce by 12 jobs through attrition and buyouts by October 2009.
Forum Communications, which bought the Herald from The McClatchy Co. soon after McClatchy's acquisition of Knight Ridder Inc., has had a hiring freeze at its papers for the past three months, Jacobs told staffers, according to a Herald article by Ryan Schuster.
"We've had great cost control," the article quoted Jacobs as saying at the staff meeting. "But cost control only goes so far."
