'Grand Rapids Press' Editor Retires After Three Decades

By: Grand Rapids Press editor Mike Lloyd will retire July 1 after 31 years as the paper's top news executive.

Lloyd, who is 63, started at the newspaper in 1967 as a general assignment reporter. When Booth Newspapers Inc. appointed him editor in 1978 at age 33, he was among the youngest in the country to lead the newsroom of a paper with a circulation of more than 100,000.

The Press won the Michigan Press Association's general excellence award seven times during Lloyd's career, including a streak of four straight years.

Lloyd said his decision to retire was influenced by the changing business and his desire to respond to other interesting opportunities.

Publisher Danny Gaydou said Monday he will prepare a succession plan over the next several weeks.
