'Grand Rapids Press' Sportswriter Cops Plea in Pot-Growing Case

By: A suspended Grand Rapids Press sports columnist who pleaded guilty to delivery or manufacture of marijuana is heading back to court.

David Mayo faces up to four years in prison when he's sentenced Tuesday.

Under a plea agreement with prosecutors reached last week, charges of growing 20 to 200 marijuana plants and maintaining a drug house were dismissed.

Kent County Circuit Judge Dennis Leiber is to sentence Mayo, who has worked at the newspaper since 1985 and specializes in boxing coverage.

The paper suspended him from his job after he was charged in February. Police say a raid on his home netted 71 marijuana plants and 32 ounces of pot in canning jars.
