Graves Publishing Adds Color to SW Arkansas Papers

Posted
By: Jim Rosenberg The Nashville (Ark.) News expanded its press with four-color King Press units, allowing it to offer its newsroom and advertisers the option of full color. The 125-year-old paper's first full-color photo appeared on its front page May 17.

The 4,300-circulation twice-weekly is owned by Graves Publishing Co., whose other publications -- three weeklies and a shopper -- also gain the benefits of the new color capacity, according to President and Publisher Lawrence Graves.

Rebuilt by Bill Simms of Caney, Kan., two stacked News King units were added to the plant's existing News King, providing capacity for 16 broadsheet pages, including two four-color and two spot-color pages. "Bill helped build our original press with King," said Graves, noting that the Joplin, Mo., press maker closed its doors at the end of 2002 (E&P, March 24, 2003).

"We are making this substantial investment in our Nashville plant because this gives us more opportunities to attract other publications and thus bring more printing dollars into the Nashville community, rather than sending dollars out of the community to have the newspaper printed, dollars which never return," Graves told the News.

The publisher asked for readers' and advertisers' patience because "we still have some bugs to work out in learning the new processes." He added that color printing would in no way diminish the paper's commitment to local reporting.
