By: Mark Fitzgerald Las Vegas Review-Journal parent Stephens Media said Friday it will launch a weekly newspaper in Boulder City, Nev. -- an announcement that comes one day after Greenspun Media Group, its joint operating agreement (JOA) partner in Las Vegas, abruptly folded its weekly there.
Stephens Media's Boulder City Review will launch on Thursday, President Sherman Frederick said in a statement. "Boulder City is a politically and socially active community that deserves a good newspaper of its own," he said. "The Boulder City Review will strive to deliver all the news, information and commentary that the city thirsts for."
Greenspun Media announced in this week's editions of the Boulder City News and the nearby Henderson Home News, published Thursday, that these would be the final issues "until further notice."
Advertising revenue had fallen off significantly in the past 18 months, Greenspun Media's parent company said in a statement. Greenspun said it would try to place employees at the Boulder City and Henderson papers in other parts of its business, if possible. Under its JOA with the Review-Journal, Greenspun publishes the Las Vegas Sun as a daily section inside the R-J.
"Given the present environment, we sadly have no choice but to take a break from the community newspaper business," Greenspun Corp. President Bruce D. Deifik said in a statement. "We apologize to our communities for the suddenness of this news, and we hope our many loyal readers will now turn to our Web sites and our other outstanding publications for their news needs."
The Boulder City News had published since 1937. The Henderson Home News was launched in 1951.
The Review-Journal said it will cease publication of its a neighborhood View section devoted to Boulder City when the new weekly launches there.
