By: Dave Astor "The Simpsons" creator Matt Groening won the Reuben Award as top cartoonist of the year at the 57th annual National Cartoonists Society convention here Saturday night.
Groening's long-running Fox TV show also has a weekly comic strip version syndicated by Universal Press Syndicate.
Among the other award winners were Clay Bennett of
The Christian Science Monitor and Christian Science Monitor News Service (editorial cartoons), "Get Fuzzy" creator Darby Conley of United Media (comic strip), "Speed Bump" cartoonist Dave Coverly of Creators Syndicate (comic panel), Steve McGarry (newspaper illustration), and Web political cartoonist Mark Fiore (new media). Also, "The Duplex" creator Glenn McCoy of Universal won two-non-newspaper categories (greeting cards and gag cartoons). And "Wee Pals" cartoonist Morrie Turner of Creators received the Milton Caniff Award for lifetime achievement.
